Exhaust fitting paste (also known as muffler cement) is used to make your exhaust system joints gas tight or to fix small muffler holes. It is applied during the installation and hardens like metal forming a perfect seal.
Here are some installation tips:
Remove rust and dirt from the joints before applying paste. While you should put enough paste on the joints, be careful not to put too much on. If you have flange, olive or flare type joints, these should not require exhaust paste at all.
Some mufflers have a tiny hole on the bottom from the factory to drain the condensation. Do not cover this hole with the paste as it will reduce the life of the muffler.
It is strongly advised not to put the paste in front of the catalytic converter as excessive paste that gets into the converter causes an irreversible reaction, potentially destroying the device.
